Stephen Costanza, Maine Artist

Steve
Stephen Costanza studied music theory and composition at Syracuse University before attending the Philadelphia College of Art to pursue a career in the visual arts. He has worked as both a graphic designer and illustrator for several years in a career that has encompassed silk screening, apparel design, advertising design, and book illustration. He has always maintained a strong interest in music; from 1980 to 1992 he played the piano professionally in a ragtime/classical music ensemble, performing alongside a violinist.

His artwork has appeared in magazines, newspapers, advertising and text books, with clients ranging from magazines The American Prospect and Cricket to the Boston Ballet, Four Seasons Hotel, and Boston Lyric Opera. Five of his paintings were exhibited in the 2000 Children's Book Fair in Bologna, Italy, being one of 89 artists accepted from a total of 500 applicants. In November 2004 his work was exhibited at the Museum of American Illustration in New York City, as part of a show devoted to children's book illustration.

His first picture book, Noodle Man, The Pasta Superhero, written by April Sayre, was published in March 2002. He combined his love of music and painting for Mozart Finds A Melody, his first book as both author and illustrator, published by Henry Holt & Company in September 2004. He is currently at work on a story about Antonio Vivaldi, also to be published by Holt. For the past two years he has made several appearances at elementary schools, as a visiting author/illustrator.
